“Secret Sauce” is an animated short film in development by prize-winning illustrator Glàfira Smith.
Home-cooked fare reveals the relationship between a mother and daughter. Through the conversations held over the stove, we are submerged in exquisite, day-to-day minutiae and the years slip by. The mother’s recipes and secret tips written for her daughter become a posthumous testament, and the daughter’s recreation of the dishes a eulogy to her mother. The dishes are cheeky, fun, delicious, just like the mother.
A piece of documentary spirit that tells a universal story through the tiny things in life.
“Secret Sauce” (original title “Secrets de Mare”) by Glafira Smith was one of 18 selected stories to be published in Vinyetari, Norma Comics 2020. She later went on to twice win the Ara Catalan Comic Award with a Best Comic in 2023 and Special Mention in 2021.
“Secret Sauce” (original title Secrets de mare) is a Horizontal Films Media S.L. production in coproduction with Take It Easy Films, Portugal; and Tarranà Films, Valencia. Funded by ICEC Institute Català de les Empreses Culturals and selected for Incubator Animac industry days.
